Gouri Biswas is a self-taught visual artist based in Kolkata, India. Working with layered surfaces, collage, and bright colors, she creates abstract cityscapes that reflect her personal journey through urban life. Her paintings explore the delicate balance between the opportunities and the quiet cruelties embedded in city existence.

Inspired by life experiences, memories, cities, and social concerns, Gouri translates emotional landscapes into textured, expressive compositions. Free from academic boundaries, she embraces experimentation and intuitive processes, allowing her artistic language to grow organically.

Through her work, she invites viewers to pause, reflect, and engage with the unseen stories and emotional rhythms that shape contemporary urban life.

Aritstic Journey

I was born and raised in Kolkata, India — a city where color, chaos, and poetry coexist in every corner. In my twenties, I saw a painting for the first time — it was love at first sight! That single encounter changed my life and awakened a deep, lifelong curiosity about art. I began visiting exhibitions, observing artists, and gradually started painting to discover its mysteries.

Balancing motherhood and a demanding job, I painted whenever time allowed — late nights, early mornings, and busy weekends. After thirty-two years on a non-art job, I took early retirement to pursue my dream of becoming a full-time artist.

As a woman living in a city, I have witnessed both its opportunities and its cruelties. Shelter becomes a lifelong pursuit — to save and struggle for a small corner to belong. Here, relationships often turn transactional, and speed dictates survival. Such experiences shape the emotional landscape of my work.

Working with acrylic, mixed media, paper, and collage, I translate the rhythm, resilience, and vulnerability of city life onto my canvas. Fragments of steel and glass emerge through layered textures, carrying traces of memory, endurance, and emotion.

At this stage in my journey, my paintings have become intimate reflections of my life — carrying my joys, sorrows, and scars. Through them, I explore the intersections of womanhood, urban existence, and the fragile beauty of human hope. Amidst continuous movement and noise, I search for moments of stillness and meaning — a quiet reminder that art, like life, continues to evolve, breathe, and heal.
